Surviving the Teething Years

Story By Caroline

When we are preggers, we naturally daydream over the cute cuddles, the super sweet smiles, and those chubby toes peeking out from their swaddle. Little do we ever think (or get warned about!), the joys of teething.

Hey, some bubbas are even born with a toothy peg or two!

Fast-forward to surviving the epic physical wonder of birth (yep, kudos to you strong mama!). Then the first year of motherhood really is a haze of sleep deprivation, scrolling insta, and googling appropriate poo colours. Full of love and magical moments for sure, but a lot of patting, bouncing, humming and soothing in between. But we wouldn’t have it any other way, right lovely??

So in between all of this, likely when you’ve just got yourselves into some vague rhythm (or dare I say, even a routine?!), your precious babe flips a switch. The smiles are long gone. The playing is no more. The koala clinging is out in full force. Nappies are undesirable to say the least. The drool is in free flow. Rashes are in all the places. Bottles are swiped straight from your hand. WOW. Where did this child come from?! Yep – all of this. This is teething mama. Just that minor thing that no one EVER warned you about!

To help get you through (don’t worry only 20 emerging teeth to endure!), I’d love to share with you 4 of my most loved tips:

1. Wine

All joking aside, this is a hard time lovely. You are tired, worried, anxious and just wanting your little one to be happy again (which they will, but you need to be ok when it all ends too!). You need to be able to take time for yourself and enjoy it. So if that is a wine, drink it. If it’s a walk on the beach, try and escape the house. If it’s getting your hair done to feel semi human, you’re probably pushing it mama… let’s be honest, that’s probably not gonna happen #FocusOnSmallWins. But you may be able to enjoy a good soak in the bath instead. In all seriousness, catch those 5 minutes when you can, breathe, and know that this too will pass.

2. Chamomile Tea

For you and babe As a natural sedative, chamomile helps to relax and ease the pain. So be sure to enjoy a cup at whatever time of day you need. If you are brave enough to still be breastfeeding (eeeeep hello sharp toothy pegs!), chamomile tea will pass through your breastmilk and the bub will also reap the benefits. You can also make up a strong brew (let steep for a couple of hours), then pour into an ice cube or popsicle moulds and freeze. Babe will love these to chomp down on and help relieve those sore, inflamed gums.

3. All Things Cold

Get creative here mama, literally anything you are happy for babe to pop in their mouth… clean it and chill it! That extra coldness will certainly help to numb sore gums and keep babe entertained for a while. Some of my faves include:

  • Bamboo toothbrushes – soak in water and chill or freeze
  • Teaspoons in the fridge – easy to hold and something they aren’t usually “allowed” to have
  • Wash cloth – soak in water (or that chamomile tea), then freeze. Let babe chow down!
  • Celery, cucumber, carrot sticks – straight from the fridge
  • Their dummy – dunk in water and pop it in the freezer. Suckable heaven!! These hevea rubber ones are perfect!

4. Pressure

If they will let you near their gums, a gentle massage will work wonders and may even see them smile again. Just be careful of any chompers! A clean finger or knuckle is perfect for this (and always on hand, haha, get it?!). A gentle massage on their cheek is also lovely, all the way up to their ear and down to their jaw (my little girl loves this). You can also apply some diluted essential oils such as lavender, chamomile or helichrysum to help settle, soothe and relieve pain. We use this beautiful diluted roller blend.

Safe and suitable teether toys are also perfect to provide some pressure to chew on. We are huge fans of the swiss cross teethers, made of silicone, perfect to grasp and great to get right where the pain is. Wooden toys are wonderful and give that extra benefit of sensory play, encouraging grasping and textural exploration.

I so hope that you can use some of these ideas today… it is a super tricky time for everyone in the family. Look after yourselves and know that this phase won’t be around forever (and luckily our little ones won’t remember it!). Let me know if you discover any other amazing home hacks, I’m all ears…!
